Intro to Public Speaking

SESSION ONE: BABY STEPS
Awkward Introduction/Conversation - Britian's Got Talent

Students will begin their public speaking journey with two simple exercises:

1) Handshakes/Introducing Yourself
2) Partner Introductions: Two Truths and a Lie


SESSION TWO: IMPROMPTU TOPICS & STORY TIME
1) Students will pair up, stand in front of the class in turn, and discuss/debate a topic given to them in the moment.

2) Time permitting, students will (individually) be presented with an image, and will provide a caption, or story, for the image.


SESSION THREE: DEMONSTRATION SPEECH & POETRY SELECTION
Students will demonstrate how to do something that the teacher has suggested, but will not be allowed to use any props or visual aids - their imaginations and gestures will be their only resource! Students will be introduced to the performance rubric, and will be evaluated by their peers next week.

SESSION FOUR: POETRY
Students will read/perform their selected poem.  Students will be evaluated by their peers.

SESSION FIVE: CHILDRENS' BOOKS
Students will browse childrens' book selections, and will decide on the childrens' book that they will read next week.  Students will begin practicing dramatic reading, by participating in short acting scenes.

SESSION SIX: JUDGED PRESENTATION
Students will read aloud a children's book of their choosing (teachers will guide the selection process), and will be evaluated on the following: Poise; Voice; Life; Eye Contact; Gestures; Speed.  These elements will be explained during session five.

Judges from the community will be present, and will provide feedback for students.
